Akhil Bakshi travelled to Afghanistan in September 2002 and saw the  problems facing the proud nation: trying to  prevent mass starvation by managing the continuing five-year famine that has forced people in remote mountain settlements to eat grass; replenishing livestock herds that have been decimated by the drought; tackling widespread rural indebtedness that is forcing families to sell off their daughters in marriage; providing urgent medical assistance to the thousands of innocent people caught in crossfire between power-hungry warlords, between the Taliban and the Northern Alliance, and between Al-Qaeda and the US; providing assistance to the refugee camps where hundreds  of children die every day due to exposure and starvation; and raising schools from the rubble.     Read on

Tiger, the arrogant and proud king of the jungle, whose realm was unchallenged even by the likes of Alexander, Changez Khan and Tamur Lane, fell prey, first to the greed of hunters in quest of ‘trophies’, then to the mercenary poachers – who traded every organ of the tiger for money, and most recently to ‘planned development’ encroaching on tiger territory.            Read on..

Unlike women leaders and Prime Ministers elsewhere, the south Asian pantheon of women leaders has not risen from the political ranks, nor have they had any work experience in any sector of the economy. All, with the exception of Indira Gandhi, were inexperienced as politicians and some were homemakers and mothers. Yet they have been Prime Ministers and President.   Read on..
