Temples Along the Indus
by Prof. Michael Meister
High
above the mighty Indus, on hills commonly called the Salt Range, stand
important remains of forts with citadels and temples. Built from the 6th to
the 11th centuries AD, these structures lie in what was ancient India's far
northwest, now in the Punjab and North West Frontier provinces of Pakistan.
Largely ignored by scholars in this century, and orphaned from the main
stream of architectural scholarship since the partition of India in 1947,
these remains form an important link in the history of South Asian
architecture.
Amin Guljee - Face
to face
Amin Guljee, a young
sculptor from Karachi, Pakistan, held his one-man show, earlier this year,
at the IMF Gallery in Washington DC. In his early thirties, Amin has
sculpted calligraphic forms and Buddhas in copper and bronze and exhibited
his work the world over. Pakistan’s foremost sculptor, Amin’s natural
and instinctive thrust is towards spirituality – his show in Washington
was called ‘Searching for Light’. Amin graduated from Yale with a Major
in Art History. In an exclusive to ‘the-south-asian’, Amin talks
about his work, his beliefs, his values and his aspirations. His father is
the eminent Pakistani artist Guljee.
Sari - groovier
and youth-focused
Sari is the most ancient of
garbs. Its dimensions have not changed since its origin - only styles of
wearing it have. Designers Anju Modi, Mukta Jain and Abha Dalmia have
repackaged this traditional wear - giving it a sartorial style and an
individual twist .
Ronu Mazumdar -
Upbeat Fusion
Considered
by many as a worthy successor to Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Ronu Mazumdar
is a bridge - bringing together musical traditions. A string of
awards, many albums of fusion music with leading names in the world of
classical music, a musical score for the celebrated Hollywood film, Primary
Colours, and a Grammy nomination - Ronu is striving for more.
