Raghu Rai

His latest book, a stunning picture history of the Sikhs,  is a pictorial tribute to the progressive spirit of the Sikhs. He has teamed up with another master, author Khushwant Singh, to bring out a coffee table book, titled, The Sikhs. At 60 he continues to display the same enthusiasm and artistic temperament that won him a Padmashree in 1971 and compelled the  Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris to put up a permanent exhibition of 25 of his best works.        

 

Laxmi Sehgal

Fifty six years after she joined the INA (Indian National Army) and fought the British in the jungles of Burma, Capt. Laxmi Sehgal has the same spirit as she fights the apathy and ignorance of her patients. And society.  At 87 she is a practicing doctor in Kanpur.

Mira Nair's 'Monsoon Wedding' won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival last month.  Critics are calling her a worthy successor to contemporary directors like Hanif Kureishi and Damien O'Donnel who have portrayed the dilemma of immigrant Indians in the west. But few have done it as powerfully as this Harvard-educated filmmaker
