Editor’s Note

It has been a rare privilege to have His Holiness The Dalai Lama grace the cover of this issue. Our photo essay on Tibetans in India is not a profound statement of any kind but a recognition of their peaceful struggle, endurance and hope. "All we can do is wait" – His Holiness the Dalai Lama has often said – reflective and thoughtful words – not fatalistic. And he must have the most engaging mind on the planet.

We have also enjoyed putting together a travel feature on Sri Lanka and have covered some unusual places for relaxation and fun. Geoffrey Bawa’s garden estate Lunuganga is perhaps one of the most aesthetic and stimulating places to go to.

In the human context, there is a story of adventure – of two IAF pilots flying a microlight round the world in 80 days – and creating a world record at the time. However, there is another story of adventure – that of Nalni Jayal – who turned an entire career in the civil service into an opportunity to serve the communities in the districts where he was posted. An inspiring life.

And there is more.

I would like to wish all our readers a Happy Diwali, Merry Christmas, and a Peaceful 2010.

Roopa Bakshi
